K-10 English, Mathematics, Science and History

The Board of Studies is developing new K-10 syllabuses in English, mathematics, science and history.

This follows state and territory education ministers’ endorsement of the content descriptions in the Australian Curriculum: Foundation to Year 10 in December last year. (Foundation will continue to be called Kindergarten in NSW).

The new syllabuses will support implementation of the Australian Curriculum content descriptions, with syllabus features familiar to and appreciated by NSW teachers. Read more about this in the November 2010 Memorandum to Principals and Stakeholders.

In 2011 there will be opportunities for involvement of teachers and the wider education community in the development of the new NSW curriculum. Keep in touch about opportunities for consultation and feedback by subscribing to the Board Bulletin.

Primary and secondary principals are also reminded there will be no change to the NSW curriculum in 2011 Official Notice BOS 18/10.

Phase 2 learning areas – Geography, The Arts and Languages

The Australian Curriculum, Assessment and Reporting Authority (ACARA) released the Shape of the Australian Curriculum: Geography in January this year. NSW feedback contributed to the final paper.

The draft Shape of the Australian Curriculum: The Arts was released by ACARA for consultation in late 2010. Feedback received from the Board’s online survey last year and the face-to-face consultations being held this term will contribute to the final Shape Paper.

ACARA released the draft Shape of the Australian Curriculum: Languages on 31 January 2011. The Board will be consulting with teachers and the public during Term 1. Further details on the consultation process will be available through the Board Bulletin and the Board’s website.
