The Australian Resuscitation Council (ARC) has released updated guidelines for basic life support.

As a result, any reference in the HSC Requirements and Advice or HSC Content to:

  • DRABCD – danger, response, airway, breathing, CPR and defibrillator (if available)

is replaced by:

  • DRSABCD – danger, response, send for help, airway, breathing, CPR and defibrillator (if available).

The HSC Requirements and Advice or HSC Content should be amended in the following VET Industry Curriculum Frameworks:

  • Construction
  • Electrotechnology
  • Human Services
  • Primary Industries (final year of delivery with Year 12, 2012)
  • Retail Services

These changes are effective immediately, including 2012 HSC examinations and beyond.

In the 2012 HSC examinations, questions related to the guidelines for basic life support will be phrased in such a way that students who are unaware of the changes will not be disadvantaged.

Details of the updated guidelines are available on the Australian Resuscitation Council (ARC) website under ‘Flowcharts and signs’ at www.resus.org.au.

Advice on the impact of changes to basic life support guidelines on assessment for AQF VET qualifications can be obtained from the Registered Training Organisation (RTO) delivering HSC VET courses.
