Official Notice: Updated guidelines for basic life support - Kindergarten to Year 6; Years 7 to 10 and Stage 6 courses

Who needs to read this notice:
Principals
Curriculum coordinators
Head teachers and teachers of K-6 PDHPE; Years 7-12 PDHPE; Years 7-12 Technology; and Stage 6 Life Skills.

 

The Australian Resuscitation Council (ARC) has released updated guidelines for basic life support.

As a result, any reference in Kindergarten to Year 6 syllabuses and support materials; Years 7-10 syllabuses and support materials; Stage 6 syllabuses, support materials and associated documents; other Board advice or documents to:

  • DRABCD – danger, response, airway, breathing, CPR and defibrillator (if available)

is replaced by

  • DRSABCD – danger, response, send for help, airway, breathing, CPR and defibrillator (if available).

The Key Learning Area for Kindergarten to Year 6 syllabus and associated materials affected is:

 - Personal Development Health and Physical Education

The Key Learning Areas and Years 7-12 syllabuses and associated materials affected are:

 - Human Society and Its Environment

  • Work Studies CEC – Stage 6

 - Personal Development Health and Physical Education

  • PDHPE – Years 7-10
  • Physical Activity and Sports Studies CEC – Years 7-10
  • PDHPE – Stage 6
  • PDHPE – Stage 6 Life Skills
  • Exploring Early Childhood CEC – Stage 6
  • Sport, Lifestyle and Recreation CEC – Stage 6

 - Technology

  • Marine and Aquaculture Technology CEC – Years 7-10
  • Marine Studies CEC – Stage 6

These changes are effective immediately, including where applicable for 2012 HSC examinations and beyond.

In the 2012 HSC examinations, questions related to the guidelines for basic life support will be phrased in such a way that students who are unaware of the changes will not be disadvantaged.
