In 2012, as part of the enhancements to the moderation of school-awarded grades under the Record of School Achievement arrangements, the Board of Studies introduced the policy that schools may be required to retain samples of student work in selected courses. The purpose of retaining work samples is to enable the school to provide evidence of their interpretation of the standards for a course where the Board’s monitoring processes require them to do so.

From 2013, schools are required to retain work samples in both Stage 5 and Stage 6 Preliminary courses.

In 2013, work samples are to be retained in the courses listed below. Schools are asked to keep three work samples for each course, representing the upper, middle and lower range of achievement of their cohort. Each of these work samples should demonstrate performance towards the end of the stage that is typical of the student(s) awarded a particular grade (A to E) by the school. Further details will be made available on the RoSA page of the Board’s website.

Stage 5 (Year 10): English, Mathematics and Science.

Stage 6 Preliminary (Year 11): English (Standard), English (Advanced), Mathematics, Mathematics General, Biology, Chemistry, Ancient History, Business Studies, Modern History, PDHPE, and Visual Arts.
