Teaching the new curriculum in primary schools

The new Board of Studies K–6 English, Mathematics, History, and Science and Technology syllabuses include the agreed Australian curriculum content. The new syllabuses also include content that clarifies the breadth and depth of learning and scope. The Australian curriculum achievement standards underpin the syllabus outcomes and the stage statements for Early Stage 1 to Stage 3.

Implementation plan for K–6

In 2013 schools will continue to use the existing NSW K–6 syllabuses.

Implementation of the new syllabuses will begin from 2014.

Syllabus When does implementation begin?
K–6 English Start teaching in 2014
K–6 Mathematics Optional to teach in 2014
Start teaching in 2015
K–6 Science and Technology Optional to teach in 2014
Start teaching in 2015
K–6 History Optional to teach in 2015
Start teaching in 2016

For Kindergarten to Year 6, courses of study and educational programs are based on the outcomes of syllabuses. The content describes in more detail how the outcomes are to be interpreted and used, and the intended learning appropriate for the stage. In considering the intended learning, teachers will make decisions about the sequence, the emphasis to be given to particular areas of content, and any adjustments required based on the needs, interests and abilities of their students.

The knowledge, understanding and skills described in the outcomes and content provide a sound basis for students to successfully move to the next stage of learning.

The hours recommended for each syllabus in the K–6 classroom has not changed. To view a pie graph of the current recommended hours that will continue to apply to the new syllabuses, click here.
