Higher School Certificate Examinations Monday 12 October 2015

Morning

English (ESL) Paper 1
Candidature: 2425 (as at 1 September 2015)
Begins: 10:20 am Ends: 12:00 pm
Paper 1 – Language Study within an Area of Study

The paper consists of two sections.
Section I (25 marks) consists of a number of short-response questions based on unseen texts.
Section II (20 marks) consists of one question requiring an extended response.
All questions are compulsory.

English (Standard) and English (Advanced)
Candidature: 58105 (as at 1 September 2015)
Begins: 10:20 am Ends: 12:30 pm
Paper 1 – Area of Study
All students enrolled in English (Standard) and English (Advanced) sit this examination. In addition, there are separate Paper 2 examinations for each course.

The paper consists of three sections.
Section I (15 marks) consists of one question with a number of short response parts based on unseen texts related to the Area of Study.
Section II (15 marks) consists of one question requiring students to compose or adapt a text for a specified context, purpose and audience.
Section III (15 marks) consists of one question requiring an extended response based on the Area of Study.
All questions are compulsory.

Afternoon

Japanese Beginners
Candidature: 654 (as at 1 September 2015)
Begins: 2:00 pm Ends: 4:40 pm

The paper consists of three sections.
Section I – Listening (30 marks)
In this section, students listen and respond to recorded texts in Japanese. Questions are phrased in English for responses in English.
Section II – Reading (30 marks)
In this section, students read texts in Japanese and answer questions phrased in English, for responses in English.
Section III – Writing in Japanese (20 marks)
This section consists of two parts. Part A is made up of two questions phrased in English, requiring responses in Japanese. Part B consists of two questions phrased in English and Japanese, requiring responses in Japanese. Students answer one question.

Modern Hebrew Continuers
Candidature: 39 (as at 1 September 2015)
Begins: 2:00 pm Ends: 5:00 pm

The paper consists of three sections.
Section I – Listening and Responding (30 marks)
There are two parts in this section. In Part A (20 marks), students listen and respond to recorded texts in Hebrew. Questions are in English for responses in Hebrew. In Part B (10 marks), students respond to questions on two texts in Hebrew. Questions are in English and Hebrew for responses in Hebrew.
Section II – Reading and Responding (30 marks)
This section has two parts. In Part A (20 marks), students read two texts in Hebrew and answer questions phrased in English, for responses in English. In Part B (10 marks), students read a short text in Hebrew. The task is phrased in English for a response in Hebrew.
Section III – Writing in Modern Hebrew (15 marks)
Students are required to write an original text in Hebrew. There is a choice of two questions.
