Higher School Certificate Examinations Thursday 15 October 2015

Morning

Ancient History
Candidature: 10918 (as at 1 September 2015)
Begins: 9:25 am Ends: 12:30 pm

The paper consists of four sections. Section I is compulsory. Students attempt one question from each of Sections II, III and IV. All sections are of equal value.
Section I Cities of Vesuvius – Pompeii and Herculaneum (25 marks)
There are source-based short-answer and multiple-choice questions (15 marks). There is also a source-based question (10 marks). Answers are written in the spaces provided in the question booklet.
Section II Ancient Societies (25 marks)
There are 10 questions, one for each ancient society. Each question consists of a number of parts. Students attempt all parts of one question.
Section III Personalities (25 marks)
There are 12 questions, one for each personality. Each question has a number of parts. Students attempt all parts of one question.
Section IV Historical Periods (25 marks)
There are 16 extended-response questions, one for each historical period. Each question offers an internal choice of two. Students attempt one.

Arabic Extension
Candidature: 53 (as at 1 September 2015)
Begins: 9:30 am Ends: 11:30 am

The paper consists of two sections.
Section I – Response to prescribed text (25 marks)
This section has two parts. In Part A, students answer a number of short-answer questions based on a short extract from the prescribed text. In Part B, the question relates to another extract from the prescribed text. Students respond in Arabic to an extended-response question which is phrased in both English and Arabic.
Section II – Writing in Arabic (15 marks)
Students have a choice of two extended-response questions related to the prescribed issues and respond in Arabic.

Classical Hebrew Extension
Candidature: 22 (as at 1 September 2015)
Begins: 9:30 am Ends: 11:30 am

The paper consists of two sections.
Section I: Prescribed Text (30 marks)
In this section there are two parts. In Part A, students answer short-response questions on extracts from the prescribed biblical and Talmudic texts. In Part B, students answer an extended-response question based on an extract/s from the prescribed texts.
Section II: Non-prescribed Text (20 marks)
In this section, students answer questions on the content, grammatical, literary and linguistic features of non-prescribed texts.

Indonesian Background Speakers
Candidature: 72 (as at 1 September 2015)
Begins: 9:30 am Ends: 12:30 pm

The paper consists of three sections:
Section I – Listening and Responding (20 marks)
This section has two parts. In Part A (10 marks), students respond to questions based on one text in Indonesian. Questions are phrased in English and Indonesian for responses in English. In Part B (10 marks), students hear two texts in Indonesian. The question is based on both texts and phrased in Indonesian and English for a response in Indonesian.
Section II – Reading and Responding (55 marks)
This section has two parts. In Part A, students respond to one or more prescribed texts in either English or Indonesian. In Part B, students exchange information in response to an unseen text in Indonesian. The question is phrased in Indonesian and English for a response in Indonesian.
Section III – Writing in Indonesian (25 marks)
Students write an original text in Indonesian. There is a choice of two tasks. Questions are phrased in Indonesian and English.

Japanese Background Speakers
Candidature: 19 (as at 1 September 2015)
Begins: 9:30 am Ends: 12:30 pm

The paper consists of three sections.
Section I – Listening and Responding (20 marks)
This section has two parts. In Part A (10 marks), students respond to questions based on one text in Japanese. Questions are phrased in English and Japanese for responses in English. In Part B (10
marks), students hear two texts in Japanese. The question will be based on both texts and will be phrased in Japanese and English for a response in Japanese.

Afternoon

Earth and Environmental Science
Candidature: 1489 (as at 1 September 2015)
Begins: 1:55 pm Ends: 5:00 pm

The paper consists of two sections.
Section I Core (75 marks) consists of two parts.
Part A consists of 20 multiple choice questions (20 marks) answered on a separate machine-scored answer sheet. Part B consists of short-response questions (55 marks) answered in the spaces provided on the question paper. All questions in Section I are compulsory.
Section II Options (25 marks) consists of four questions, one for each option. Students answer the question based on the option they have studied. The question is answered in two separate writing booklets.

German Beginners
Candidature: 111 (as at 1 September 2015)
Begins: 2:00 pm Ends: 4:40 pm

The paper consists of three sections.
Section I – Listening (30 marks)
In this section, students listen and respond to recorded texts in German. Questions are phrased in English for responses in English.
Section II – Reading (30 marks)
In this section, students read texts in German and answer questions phrased in English, for responses in English.
Section III – Writing in German (20 marks)
This section consists of two parts. Part A is made up of two questions phrased in English for responses in German. Part B consists of two questions phrased in English and German for responses in German. Students answer one question.

German Continuers
Candidature: 239 (as at 1 September 2015)
Begins: 2:00 pm Ends: 5:00 pm
The paper consists of three sections.
Section I – Listening and Responding (25 marks)
In this section, students listen and respond to recorded texts in German. Questions are phrased in English for responses in English or German, as specified.
Section II – Reading and Responding (40 marks)
This section has two parts. In Part A, students read two texts written in German and respond in English to short-answer questions phrased in English. In Part B, the question is based on a short text written in German. Students respond in German to an extended-response question which is phrased in English.
Section III – Writing in German (15 marks)
There are two writing tasks. For the second writing task, students have a choice of two extended-response alternatives.

Japanese Extension
Candidature: 213 (as at 1 September 2015)
Begins: 2:00 pm Ends: 4:00 pm

The paper consists of two sections.
Section I – Response to prescribed text (25 marks)
This section has two parts. In Part A, students answer a number of short-answer questions based on a short extract from the prescribed text. In Part B, the question relates to another extract from the prescribed text. Students respond in Japanese to an extended-response question which is phrased in both English and Japanese.
Section II – Writing in Japanese (15 marks)

Retail Services
Candidature: 1784 (as at 1 September 2015)
Begins: 1:55 pm Ends: 4:00 pm

The paper consists of four sections.
Section I (15 marks) consists of 15 multiple-choice questions answered on a separate machine-scored answer sheet.
Section II (35 marks) consists of short-response questions answered in the spaces provided on the question paper.
Section III (15 marks) consists of one extended-response question answered in a separate writing booklet.
Section IV (15 marks) consists of a structured extended-response question for each of the streams. Students answer the question on the stream they have studied.
