BOSTES has approved the ongoing availability of the English Studies course. This means that schools can offer English Studies to students entering Year 11 in 2016 and beyond, knowing that it will continue to be available in the Preliminary and HSC year.

The English Studies course is now well established and meets the needs of a specific group of students.

Schools are reminded of the following guidelines when advising students about the course:

  • Stage 6 English Studies is a Content Endorsed Course with no HSC examination
  • satisfactory completion of the course fulfils English requirements for the HSC. The course counts towards the 6 units of Board Developed Courses required for the award of the HSC
  • students who complete the course are not eligible for the calculation of an Australian Tertiary Admission Rank (ATAR).

In approving student entry to the course, principals should consider indicators of the student's level of achievement in English at the end of Year 10. The English Studies course is appropriate only for those students seeking an alternative to the English (Standard) course.

Information and resources relevant to this course can be found on the BOSTES website.
