NSW: get ready to have your say on the Australian curriculum

New information posted on the Board of Studies NSW website explains the next phase of consultation around the new Australian curriculum and shows teachers and parents how they can have their say. Go to the Board's Australian curriculum advice. The information includes a copy of a detailed letter sent to all NSW school principals, a calendar of NSW consultation meetings and online registration to attend meetings. The Board's online survey about the draft Australian curriculum will be made available after the Australian Curriculum, Assessment and Reporting Authority (ACARA) releases the draft curriculum for English, mathematics, history and science. The Board's President, Tom Alegounarias, urged teachers, parents and others to make use of the opportunity to speak up about the draft Australian curriculum. "The NSW Board of Studies is responsible for advising the NSW Government on the draft Australian curriculum, and we'll be coordinating the overall NSW response to ACARA," Mr Alegounarias said. "I encourage those with an interest in the new curriculum developments to take advantage of our convenient online survey form, or even attend one of the meetings scheduled in March. "NSW has joined with the Australian Government and all other states and territories in a joint endeavour to develop an Australian curriculum, initially for English, mathematics, science and history. "Responsibility for developing the Australian curriculum is held by ACARA, while the NSW Board of Studies NSW remains responsible for advising the NSW Minister for Education and Training on the suitability of curriculum for NSW schools , including the Australian curriculum." The Australian curriculum in the areas of English, mathematics, science and history will be available for implementation from 2011. ACARA has said its draft documents for K-10 will be available in the week starting 22 February 2010.
