Brother John Taylor Memorial Prize recognises two outstanding HSC students

Emily Reinhardt's family with Minister
for Education and Training, Verity Firth

The Minister for Education and Training, Verity Firth, has announced Danny Hardiman from Bradfield College and Emily Reinhardt of Hawkesbury High School as the recipients of the 2009 Brother John Taylor Memorial Prize.

The prizes were presented at a ceremony at Parliament House, recognising both students' ability to overcome significant disadvantage to achieve outstanding results in the Higher School Certificate.

In paying tribute to Danny and Emily, Ms Firth praised their determination and courage.

Emily Reinhardt was diagnosed with leukaemia in 2006 while studying for her School Certificate. She underwent intensive chemotherapy but unfortunately suffered a relapse last year while completing her HSC studies.

Although she was seriously ill, and in and out of hospital constantly, Emily continued with her studies and was awarded dux of her school. Her teachers were amazed by her enthusiasm for learning, positive attitude and lack of self-pity, even when it was obvious that Emily was very unwell.

Sadly, Emily died earlier this year. Her older brother Erik accepted the award on behalf of Emily and her proud parents. Emily's family will put the prize money towards her younger brother Warwick's education.
