Official Notice - Stage 6 English Studies Pilot Study update

BOS 05/11

Extension of pilot study and guidelines for schools

In June 2010 the Board extended the pilot study to include any secondary school wishing to offer the English Studies course for their Preliminary Year candidature in 2011. Official Notice BOS 24/10 provides important information to schools on matters relating to the extension of the pilot study.

Revised modules

Following consultation with principals, students, parents, teachers and sector representatives during 2010, the Board has approved refinements to two modules in the English Studies draft syllabus.

The module The way we worked – English for exploring the past through industrial events in Australia has been renamed The way we were – English for exploring our past and its focus has been broadened to the past in general.

The module In the marketplace – English and the world of business has been broadened to accommodate the study of language as used in advertising, commerce and workplaces.

Schools offering the course as part of the pilot study may use either the original or the revised versions of these modules in 2011.

The modules can be accessed through the English Studies webpage.

Reporting achievement in English Studies

Performance descriptions for reporting achievement in the Stage 6 English Studies Content Endorsed Course have been developed to describe the standards to be used for reporting student achievement at the conclusion of the course. These should be used in conjunction with the syllabus assessment requirements as outlined on pp 53–55 of the English Studies draft syllabus.

The performance descriptions can be accessed through the English Studies webpage.
