Background to the Australian Curriculum in NSW

Most readers of the Board Bulletin will be familiar with the Australian Curriculum however, this edition of the Board Bulletin has been developed as a way of updating you on what has been happening in NSW, find out what’s happening in the future, and be directed to where you can get more information on the Board of Studies website.

At a federal level, the development of the Australian curriculum is managed by the Australian Curriculum, Assessment and Reporting Authority (ACARA).

In NSW, the Board of Studies is responsible for advising the NSW Minister for Education and Training on the appropriateness of the curriculum for NSW, and for the development and implementation of syllabuses.

The Board of Studies is working with the education sectors in NSW to support ACARA, and to provide input and feedback on the development of a high quality curriculum for all students from Kindergarten to Year 12.

In December 2010, Federal, State and Territory Ministers endorsed the K-10 Australian curriculum content for English, Mathematics, Science and History.

As a result, the Board of Studies has commenced work on the development of NSW Kindergarten to Year 10 syllabuses in these learning areas and will consult with teachers, stakeholder groups and the community through the development process.

The Board is working hard to ensure that teachers, parents and students receive the information they need to work with new syllabuses as they are developed.

If you know someone who might be interested in more information, suggest they subscribe to the Board Bulletin by going to the BOS NSW news section of the Board’s website and entering their email.
