ABC Splash resources

The ABC Splash website contains high quality videos and activities to support the teaching of English, Mathematics, Science and History, from Kindergarten to Year 10.

Many primary teachers have indicated that Science is an area where they are looking for new resources. Splash has some great ideas in this area.

One good example is the Early Primary Years video Keeping cool in hot weather, which would be a particularly relevant topic at this time of year. Students:

  • explore why their face turns red when they run around
  • discover what's going on under their skin when they heat up and learn how this helps them to keep cool
  • examine some of the clever ways that animals keep cool.

The associated activities before, during and after the video are age appropriate and easily resourced.

This resource could be linked to the current Science and Technology Syllabus. Sample outcomes for Kindergarten from this syllabus, for example, could include:

  • Explores and identifies ways the environment influences their daily lives – ES ES1.6.

The resource could also be used with the new Science K–10 (incorporating Science and Technology K–6) Syllabus. Suggested outcomes could include:

  • observes, using their senses, how daily and seasonal changes in the environment affect them and other living things – STe-7NE
  • identifies the basic needs of living things – STe-8NE.
