History resources for K-6 teachers

The new History K–6 syllabus is to be implemented in 2016 with an option to introduce it in 2015. The new syllabus has an increased emphasis on historical skills and concepts, and the use of primary and secondary resources. These are also relevant when using the current HSIE syllabus.

To assist in bringing this focus to the current syllabus a range of resources are available. A selection of visual texts is located on the Board’s website.

Also, the State Library of NSW has an excellent collection of resources, which will be invaluable in bringing History alive in the primary classroom. Using the current HSIE syllabus, teachers can source primary and secondary materials on topics such as the discovery of gold. Click here to explore resources available at the State Library of NSW.

In addition, Sydney Living Museums (as a part of Historic Houses Trust), is developing new and engaging programs for schools to take advantage of video conferencing technology. Important historical sources are woven into lively presentations to bring stories associated with Historic Houses Trust properties to life and into the classroom. Click here to view the available programs or click here to look at the general educational resources from Historic Houses Trust.
