Higher School Certificate Examinations Tuesday 4 November 2014
Morning
Geography
Candidature: 4487 (as at 1 September 2014)
Begins: 9:25 AM Ends: 12:30 PM
The paper consists of three sections.
Section I (20 marks) consists of 20 multiple-choice questions answered on a separate machine-scored answer sheet.
Section II (40 marks) consists of a number of short-answer questions, which may have a number of parts. Answers are written in the spaces provided on the question paper.
All questions in Sections I and II are compulsory.
Section III (40 marks) consists of three extended-response questions of equal value. Students answer two out of the three questions.
A separate coloured stimulus booklet is provided.
Afternoon
Chinese Background Speakers
Candidature: 655 (as at 1 September 2014)
Begins: 2:00 PM Ends: 5:00 PM
The paper consists of three sections.
Section I Listening and Responding (20 marks)
This section has two parts.
In Part A (10 marks), students respond to questions based on one text in Chinese. Questions are phrased in English and Chinese for responses in English.
In Part B (10 marks), students hear two texts in Chinese. The question will be based on both texts and will be phrased in Chinese and English for a response in Chinese.
Section II Reading and Responding (55 marks)
This section has two parts.
In Part A, students respond to one or more prescribed texts in either English or Chinese.
In Part B, students exchange information in response to an unseen text in Chinese. The question is phrased in Chinese and English for a response in Chinese.
Section III Writing in Chinese (25 marks)
Students write an original text in Chinese. There is a choice of two tasks. Questions are phrased in Chinese and English.
History Extension
Candidature: 2000 (as at 1 September 2014)
Begins: 1:55 PM Ends: 4:00 PM
The paper consists of two sections.
Section I (25 marks) consists of one extended response question, which uses an unseen passage as a stimulus for exploration of issues of historiography.
Section II (25 marks) consists of one extended response question, which asks candidates to analyse a historiographical issue with reference to a case study.
Both sections are compulsory and are of equal value.
