Supervisors of Marking briefing

This month, eleven new Supervisors of Marking (SOMs) participated in the first of eight briefing sessions they will attend this year. The briefings prepare them for their role in the HSC examinations this year.

The SOMs were addressed by Paul Hewitt, Executive Director, Curriculum, Teaching and Assessment, and other staff from Examination Operations Branch. The session covered aspects of the administrative preparation for their role, particularly the appointment of suitably qualified markers.

BOSTES encourages experienced teachers to become markers, as students can benefit from the exposure HSC markers have to best practice in assessment. Those HSC markers who demonstrate strong leadership and management skills have the opportunity to become senior markers and, in come cases, SOMs. SOMs are generally appointed for a maximum of five years.

Applications for marking open and close in Term 1 each year, and are advertised in the BOSTES Bulletin. Vacant SOM positions are also advertised in the BOSTES Bulletin in Terms 1 and 2.
