From the Chief Executive: HSC examinations affected by bushfires

School principals, teachers and HSC examination presiding officers have been doing a tremendous job supporting students affected by the NSW bushfires.

The first two weeks of exams have been marked by substantial disruptions in schools, particularly across the Blue Mountains, however many students have been able to attend exams at other schools.

While it is still very possible that there will be further effects on the exams as a result of the fires, I would like to take this opportunity to thank principals, teachers, presiding officers, Board staff and the students themselves for the practical and effective way they have responded.

The Board has extensive experience dealing with situations where large numbers of students are affected by natural disasters while undertaking their HSC exams, and our long-standing processes for Illness/Misadventure appeals will be in place for group and individual appeals.

While the closing date for Illness/Misadventure appeals is 6 November 2013, principals can commence preparing appeals at any time, and provide further documentation as it comes to hand.

Over the rest of the examination period, the Board will use the Latest News section on our home page, as well as the Board Bulletin, to provide information on how the impact of bushfires on the exams is being managed.

If principals have questions on the Illness/Misadventure appeal process, they should contact Neal Crocker in Student Support Services on (02) 9367 8465.
