HSC Design and Technology students - making life easier

The products of the inventive minds of 2012 Design and Technology HSC students will be on display from 15 February in the DesignTECH exhibition held at the Powerhouse Museum.

Tom Alegounarias, President of the Board of Studies NSW, said many of the projects included in this year’s exhibition were designed to make life easier.

“Design and Technology students are challenged in this course to develop a product, system or environmental design to meet an identified need.

“The projects selected for exhibition all assist people in their daily lives and are sustainable, accessible, functional, socially beneficial, beautiful and affordable.

“As part of this course, students are required to submit comprehensive portfolios including information on production and testing, research, planning, costing and evaluation and the professionalism of these documents is testimony to the talent found across NSW.

“The exhibits look great and when you see the accompanying portfolios you realise that these students have really considered what they need to do to make what is on display a reality,” Mr Alegounarias said.

The exhibit will be held at the Powerhouse Museum from 15 February to 12 May and includes innovative community friendly initiatives such as the:

  • ‘Dynafork’ for commuting bike riders
  • ‘Ironstein’ an ironing board that adapts to the shape of clothes
  • ‘Flipsock’ a device for surfers and hydrotherapy patients.

“The Design and Technology course is a demanding one but it is also immensely rewarding as students bring to life well designed products or services that are not only innovative but are good for the community and good for business,” Mr Alegounarias said.

The DesignTECH exhibition is included in the admission price for the Powerhouse Museum.
