Support for students with special education needs for the new K-10 syllabuses

New sample units of work have been published to provide teachers with models of programming for students with special education needs. The sample units apply to a range of educational settings:

  • K–6 Communication unit (for students with complex communication needs)
  • English Stage 4: The Storyteller and the Story (integrated mainstream and Life Skills unit)
  • English Life Skills Stage 4: I Have an Opinion
  • English Life Skills Stage 5: Viewing and Reviewing Film
  • Mathematics Life Skills Stage 4: Time
  • Mathematics Life Skills Stage 5: Money
  • Mathematics Life Skills Stage 5: Out and About in the Community
  • Science Life Skills Stage 4: Depending on Each Other
  • History Life Skills Stage 4: The Black Death
  • History Stage 5: The Industrial Revolution (integrated mainstream and Life Skills unit)
  • Life Skills Stage 4: My Place in the Community (integrating Life Skills outcomes and content across a range of subjects).

Further sample units of work for Mathematics Life Skills have also been included in Program Builder.

These units of work are in addition to the existing sample units modelling adjustments for students with special education needs in K–6 and 7–10.

New sample scope and sequences have also been published, providing models for planning teaching programs for students with special education needs:

  • a Stage 4 sample scope and sequence for planning Life Skills units that integrate outcomes and content across subjects
  • Stage 5 sample scope and sequences for planning Life Skills units in English, Mathematics, Science and History.

These scope and sequences have been published in addition to the existing samples which provide models for integrating Life Skills outcomes into a scope and sequence for a year or Stage.
