Enviroweek: 25 - 31 August 2013

There are many weeks in the calendar that provide an opportunity for a special learning focus. One example is Enviroweek, which runs from 25 – 31 August 2013. If you are planning for a focus on the environment in Term 3, relevant outcomes from the Board’s Science and Technology syllabus could be used as the basis for this study.

Enviroweek is a week of action for Australian schools inspiring behaviour change through positive action for a sustainable future. One organisation providing support in this area is Cool Australia.

The Cool Australia website provides online units of work and learning activities for teachers and students. Integrated learning activities are year-level specific, from Kindergarten to Year 10. Topics include energy, water, waste and biodiversity.

These resources will also be a useful addition to school resources when your school begins to implement the new Science and Technology K–6 syllabus. Schools have the option of introducing the new syllabus in 2014, or as a mandatory syllabus in 2015.

Cool Australia’s Enviroweek challenge and competition:

For Enviroweek, students make a pledge to do something good environmentally, get sponsored by family and friends, and take action. Previous pledges include: wrapper free lunches, walk/bike to school, grow a food garden, start a recycling program and create a compost.
