National Health and Physical Education Day - 4 September 2013

There are many weeks in the calendar that provide an opportunity for a special learning focus. One example is National Health & Physical Education (H&PE) Day on 4 September 2013. If you are planning for a focus on health and fitness in Term 3, relevant outcomes from the Board’s PDHPE syllabus could be used as the basis for this study.

The aim of National H&PE Day is to promote the importance of health and physical education and highlight its value to the overall learning and development of children and young people.

It might be timely to review the resources used in your school including the daily activities, weekly plans and whole school scope and sequences. Have the activities and plans been reviewed recently by the school? Are the resources current and relevant? Are students being challenged? Are students seeing a benefit in their daily physical activity? Are there other opportunities for physical activity across the curriculum?

A whole school event could be planned where students, parents and teachers engage in a physical activity. This could be an activity such as a fun run, or the school could organise a series of activity stations in the school where different activities are displayed and students rotate through the stations. This can be linked to the outcomes in the NSW PDHPE syllabus. For example:

Stage Outcome
ALES1.6 Develops a repertoire of physical activities in which they can participate
ALS1.6 Participates in physical activity, recognising that it can be both enjoyable and important for health
ALS2.6 Discusses the relationship between regular physical activity and health
ALS3.6 Shows how to maintain and improve the quality of an active lifestyle.

The Australian Council for Health, Physical Education and Recreation Inc. (ACHPER) is the leading national professional association representing teachers and other professionals working in the fields of health and physical education. The ACHPER website has a variety of resources that could be used by schools to promote a healthy lifestyle and daily physical activity and is promoting National H&PE Day.
