Student voice: The Student Advisory Program and Student Advisory Group

The 2013 Board of Studies Student Advisory Group and a series of student meetings being run throughout the state are providing valuable student feedback to the Board on a range of key issues.

The 15-member Student Advisory Group comprises students from Years 10–12 and recent HSC graduates. Topics already considered and reported on by the students include Languages education, HSC course selection and requirements, Students Online, HSC: All My Own Work, HSC assessment, and illness/misadventure appeals and disability provisions.

The program also enables students to raise issues of concern and to gain a better understanding of the Board and its work. Issues identified by students so far this year include the teaching of grammar and punctuation, the theory underpinning the Stage 6 Economics syllabus, addressing social issues in the secondary curriculum, the valuing of Creative Arts education, and understanding the HSC standards-setting process.

Members of the Student Advisory Group from Sydney and nearby areas meet at the Board’s Sydney office and are joined by regional students via videoconference. The Group meets again early in Term 4.
